Learning Music

With the world getting flatter and smaller each day, mingling of cultures is imminent and that too at a rapid pace. As Indian music goes global (apart from Bollywood of course), it is all the more important for us to adjust our tunes and style of performing (live) to win hearts away from home. The purpose of this post is to throw some light on the opportunities (read options) available for us to study music outside India.

A quick check on the internet reveals a few staggering and interesting facts about music and education. While institutes have traditionally existed in India that provided formal education in music, the west too has not been left behind. A more comprehensive and profound research will take us back to 7th century when Schola Cantorun was established by the Roman catholic Church soon followed by the Chinese Royal Academy. But we’ll stop here, we’ll not dig into history too much, we’ll speak about what you could do now as a music pro.

Here is a list of the finest colleges in the world:

Royal Academy of Music, London

The Academy was founded in 1822, and ever since has trained versatile and resourceful musicians with the skills they need to enjoy life-long careers in the ever-changing profession.
An institution that trained Sir Arthur Sullivan, Sir Henry Wood, Sir John Barbirolli, Dame Myra Hess, Dennis Brain and Sir Clifford Curzon, and with strong associations back to Mendelssohn, is bound to be proud of its history.

Generally, the minimum age for Undergraduate study is 17 and the minimum for entry onto Postgraduate programmes is 21.
Try the master of music in performance degree; We heard Sir Elton John studied here too ;)

The Paris Conservatoire

The Conservatoire de Paris is a college of music and dance founded in 1795 in Paris, France. It offers instruction in music, dance, and drama, drawing on the traditions of the “French School.”

Shanghai Conservatory of Music in Shanghai

The Shanghai Conservatory of Music, with the name National Conservatory of Music, was founded on November 27, l927.
They say “This speciality has made a fine figure in musical education field. The staff have fulfilled some research programs authorized by Ministry of Culture and Shanghai Education Commission. The graduates owned well-knit professional skills, some have become core member in colleges and schools. The specialty has three-year courses for postgraduates and four-year courses for undergraduates”

Manhattan School of Music

Set in one of the world’s greatest cities, Manhattan School of Music has contributed to the vibrant culture of New York City for over 85 years. It is one of the premier private music conservatories in the nation, with nearly 275 faculty members dedicated to shaping over 800 students from 40 countries into world-class musicians.

The graduate programs of study at Manhattan School of Music enable students to perfect their musical competencies and professional artistry in specific fields.
Students may earn the master of music degree through a two-year curriculum.Alternatively, students may pursue the Postgraduate Diploma program.

Berklee College of Music (Boston, Massachusetts)

“Berklee College of Music was founded on the revolutionary principle that the best way to prepare students for careers in music is through the study and practice of contemporary music. For more than half a century, the college has evolved to reflect the state of the art of music and the music business. With more than a dozen performance and nonperformance majors, a diverse and talented student body representing more than 70 countries, and a music industry “who’s who” of alumni, Berklee is the world’s premier learning lab for the music of today—and tomorrow.”

Winning a Grammy is the highest honor for a musician—and more than 150 have gone to Berklee alumni, including Donald Fagen ‘66 of Steely Dan, Diana Krall ‘83, and Steve Vai ‘79.

Did you know the composer of The Simpsons went to Berklee? He and many other alumni have won awards for their work in television, as has film scoring department chair Dan Carlin.

Take a look at the options available, and if you thought there wasn’t much to do in this field apart from the stage… you were absolutely wrong.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
