A HowTo for young bands and artists

While traveling from Doon to Delhi, I (this is Rahul here btw) had the pleasure of talking to a couple of guys who had recently launched a band and were working on their first album. They were really excited about their original music and were really interested in giving a few of their songs away for free to get feedback on. I introduced myself and they asked me if I had any tips for upcoming bands for spreading their music online. I offered them a few things we have seen working first hand for other bands and I think this might be a good occasion to start a discussion with you nice people on the same topic.

Here are a few things we believe a band can do to spread their music, please feel free to add your ideas in the comments.

1. Build a consistent online profile. If you have a community on orkut, group on facebook, twitter account, make sure that the identity and the branding (names, images etc used) is the same everywhere.
2. Get cool business cards printed and feel free to hand it to people you meet during shows, concerts or even in trains. We do that regularly and trust us it works ;)
3. Offer demo tracks of yours for free download or at least give some mp3’s away to some of your friends and ask them to share.
4. Try to attend barcamps and see if you can play some music for them. Usually barcamps are open to such offers.
5. Here’s a little tricky one, try to be a little extrovert, tell people you meet about your band and the kind of music you people do and why its different but dont take the conversation to the limits of boring the other person.
6. Be active on your online profiles. Rather than creating a profile on every social network you come across, focus on two or three that suit you (or suit your target audience) and keep it updated.
7. Compete in online and offline competitions but be choosy. You might want to go to big college festivals for exposure but if you do not do rock, usually you will find yourself out of place, so choose wisely to compete in events and open houses.
8. Last but not the least, keep trying new ideas, may be get a few tees printed and give them away to your friends (those tees should contain some online url of yours). And finally also do stay in touch with us, our stuff gets around you know ;)

feel free to add ideas in the comments.
