    About

    SAFIRE – THE BAND

Starting off as a school band, they inevitably entered some of the renowned school fests in Kolkata and to everyone’s surprise, took most of them by storm. Bound by the common passion for good music and having some victories under their belts they decided to take up music as more than just a hobby. When young head-strong guys (some in their teens and some in their early twenties) meet , clashes are expected. But being friends first, they weathered the storms. They made music for the sheer joy. Hard work never got in their way. And from their regular jamming sessions SAFIRE was born. The five having different musical backgrounds created crazy originals each adding their own flavor and influences to their songs. The sound of the band is a mix of alternative and progressive rock with a touch of Indian classical music. WHY THE NAME “SAFIRE”??

The name has always explained itself. Whenever u think of the precious gem Sapphire, SAFIRE comes to mind. The name has been spelled differently from the gem to reflect the diversity of the band, which performs simple yet hard hitting numbers . KRSNA DWAIPAYAN MUKHERJEE: The front man, usually known as Krsna, is the guy who dazzles with his throat. Singing since he was a toddler, Indian Classical Music is his second nature, coming as freely as walking or eating. He’s no novice, having trained for sixteen years and sung with well-known masters. The soulful voice of the little kid in Anjan Dutta’s Raja Opera, he’s a really fresh and exciting voice in the band circuit and has performed at over 60 stage shows including all the major auditoriums of Kolkata. SUBHODIP BANERJEE: That magician with the guitar as his wand, he’s a young man from South Kolkata. An exceptional guitar player and a skillful arranger, he grew up listening to all Hard Rock numbers. But that hasn’t limited him musically. He might appear to be a Rock guitarist, but he comes with an impressive treasure trove of experimental music inspired from lots of instrumental numbers. He performed previously with Rudraa and Second Earth. HARSH SARAF: This fresh fish on the frying pan is a veggie, who’s been experimenting with music and also other forbidden frontiers of Indian tastes.Mr Saraf is a big fan of Jimmy Hendrix and The Rolling Stones.Playing guitars since a very young age, he has matured into a blues guitarist and fame with some beautiful riffs and unconventional licks to his name. When he feels the need to open his mouth to express himself, he submits to his whim by playing the guitar with his teeth. He is also a talented songwriter. BIJIT BHATACHARYA a.k.a. TATAI: This bespectacled scrawny young man, looks like a book-worm than the ‘Bass’ of the band. But his funky antiques on stage and his gifts on the bass justify his existence in this unique ensemble. Starting of as a guitar player, he took up the bass one day and never let go. He’s the oldest and the most experienced hand in the band and has appeared with the likes of Catch 22, Nightmare Abbey and R.I.P TUHIN PAUL: He’s the loudest member of the band. Terror really comes in an unassuming package in his case. He’ll blow you away with his high-octane drumming. Deeply rooted in metal, he has never been afraid of going beyond the limits of convention. Having started off as early as the age of twelve, he has performed with prominent bands like Alokborsho, Moshpit, Calcutta Blues and many more. .
